EPILOGUE

The church was packed, but that wasn’t a surprise. There were a great many friends, family, and business associates one had to invite to a Hughes wedding. Mae clutched her father’s arm as she walked down the aisle with him, almost faltering under the onslaught of eyes turned in her direction.

She supposed some of the people considered her an oddity and were there to satisfy their curiosity. After all, no one in the Hughes family had ever married outside the Caucasian race before. Mae decided she didn’t care about those people or their gawking and gossiping. All she cared about were the ones she loved, who were there to support her.

Her best friends Sondra and Dani preceded her up the aisle, resplendent in matching lavender gowns Mae had designed. With an unlimited budget, she had indulged in the decadence of commissioning another designer to make her beautiful pearl-gray wedding gown that floated around her and left her feeling like a princess.

As she neared her soon-to-be husband, the princess analogy fit aptly, because he was just as dashing as any Prince Charming could ever be. The most intoxicating part of all was the loving expression on his face as his arm threaded through hers, and he bent to press a kiss to her cheek before the reverend could begin the ceremony.

Mae stood straight and tall beside him, ignoring the curled nose from Kate Hughes, who sat reluctantly in the front pew on Chris’s side of the church. The woman had not been welcoming in any form or fashion, and she hadn’t bothered to hide her disapproval of the match, but she had stopped outright interference after Chris firmly halted her first attempts. As much as she obviously hated to admit it, Kate Hughes must have realized and acknowledged that her son loved Mae, and there wasn’t a damn thing she could do about it.

Filled with a slight sense of smug satisfaction at having bested Kate Hughes, she looked away from the woman who would be her mother-in-law and back to her almost-husband. In a steady and strong voice, she repeated the vows the celebrant issued and spoke, “I do,” without a hint of hesitation. Her hands didn’t shake when she took the thick platinum band from the little pillow the ring bearer held up and slid it on Chris’s finger.

He repeated the motion a few minutes later, gently sliding the platinum band onto her finger that matched the engagement ring she had worn for the past four months.

He hadn’t wasted any time after their first night back together again. As soon as the storm had ended, and they had been able to leave the shop, he had gone home with her to call Andrea to break up with the other woman. After dealing with the other woman’s tears, hysterics, and threats of reprisal for the humiliation, he had then taken Mae to bed and made love to her in a slow, sensuous fashion.

Once they had torn themselves from bed, he had been adamant about taking her to confront his mother.
